0010: The Prayer Vigil for the Earth

The Prayer Vigil for the Earth is a living prayer woven into aseamless tapestry of many traditions through collective experiences offaith.Held every fall near the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.,the Prayer Vigil provides an icon of spirituality in the UnitedStates’ capital. People of diverse faiths, cultures, ethnic backgrounds,and ages come together to practice and experience peace with self,peace with others, and peace with the Earth. The Native Americanhost tradition is joined by spiritual leaders and representatives fromall major faiths. A sacred fire burns continuously in the center ofa circle of Christian and African altars, tipis, a Jewish sukkah,a Tibetan stupa and tent, a labyrinth, a Prayer Grove, achildren’s activity area and other areas. The tipis and various holystructures stand as symbols of spiritual community in view of themonuments and Capitol dome that are symbols of our nation.

TheVigil is a volunteer event with all services, logistics and supportdonated by the participants. The next Prayer Vigil will take place onOctober 20-21, 2007. Donations can be made via www.oneprayer.org.
